Client:

John Crane Annual Report

Media:

Polished aluminum and plastic film.

Size:

18" wide x 10" high

Concept:

Illustrate the internal parts of an installed rotary seal in an intriguing, graphic way.

Rotary seals allow a rotating shaft into a housing but do not allow the fluid inside to leak out. This specialized seal uses an etched rotor to force an intermediate fluid (shown in blue) to keep the main fluid (orange) within the housing. The shaft and cut away surfaces needed to be highly polished so the machining and assembly had to be done very carefully.
